The Jamat Community in Uganda has joined the rest of the world to mourn their 49th hereditary Imam, Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini, popularly known as Aga Khan IV.

Aga Khan IV passed peacefully to Almighty Allah’s grace on 4th February 2025 in Lisbon, Portugal, surrounded by his family.

Mawlana Shah Karim’s successor, as the 50th Shia Imami Ismaili Imam, has been designated in conformity with the historical Shia Imami Ismaili tradition and practice of nass.

The designation made by Mawlana Shah Karim is recorded in his will which is to be read in the presence of the Imam’s family and senior international Jamat leaders. Thereafter, the Jamat will be notified of the declared Hazar Imam in whom the Nur exists in unbroken hereditary succession from Mawlana Ali (peace be upon him).

“As we honour, cherish and offer gratitude for the life and legacy of Mawlana Shah Karim, we remain secure under the permanent love and protection of the Nur of the Imam-of-the-Time,” reads an official statement from Jamat Community.

Former Tororo Municipality MP, Sanjay Tanna joins the world in the mourning saying, “Heartfelt condolences to the Ismailia community on the passing of Mawlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini. His visionary leadership, wisdom, and unwavering dedication have left an indelible mark on society. This is a profound loss, not only to the Ismaili Jamat but to the world at large. May his legacy continue to inspire generations to come, and may the community find strength and solace in his teachings. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the entire Jamat during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti.”

What to Expect In the Coming Days

Mawlana Shah Karim will be laid to rest in the coming days. Further information will be communicated as soon as details are finalised.

Soon thereafter, the official bayah and homage ceremony of our 50th Imam will take place. Details will be shared with the Jamat when they become available.

Special prayers will be offered in Jamatkhanas around the world. In addition, special programming will be aired on The Ismaili TV.
