The Ministry of Works and Transport has set a date for commencement of mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspection.

According to the Minister of Works and Transport, Ge. Katumba Wamala, mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspection will commence on 1st July, 2025.

He says the Ministry has already taken over the SGS facilities and will commence gradual implementation between March and June with trainings, sensitization of the public, and then come 1st July start Mandatory Motor Vehicle Inspection in full force.

The Ministry of Works and Transport on Thursday, 16th January, 2025 received 7 Vehicle Inspections Stations from M/S SGS Company.

The transfer of the Stations followed the termination of M/S SGS Mandatory Vehicle Inspection contract in 2020 and Cabinet’s decision to compensate SGS of their total investment in 2023.

The 7 Stations are located in Namanve, Namulanda, Nabbingo, Kawanda, in and around Kampala. Whereas, the regional stations are; Gulu, Mbarara and Mbale.

These stations will be used for mandatory motor vehicle inspection which entails ascertaining the mechanical condition of a car, its documentation like its ownership and registration. It also ensures that what is written in the logbook is exactly what is on the vehicles.

The Ministry of Transport says the same Stations will now going forward be used as fitment centers for Digital Registration Plates under the ITMS Project.

This will in turn improve road safety and protect the environment through the mandatory inspection of all vehicles in the country for roadworthiness and environmental compliance.
