SIRONKO: NRM Leadership Under Fire Over Fake Defections

SIRONKO

National Resistance Movement (NRM) leaders in Sironko District have been accused of showcasing their own members while falsely branding new ‘defectors’ as members of the opposition’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Over the past month, the district’s NRM leadership has been receiving new members claiming to be from the FDC.

On Thursday morning, 6th March, 2025, the district party administrator, Wilson Wambaka presented an individual with little known background, claiming him to be the FDC boss for Legenya Sub County in Budadiri East, a move that quickly spread across Bugisu WhatsApp forums.

Patrick Waniaye, the FDC party chairman for Sironko, has denounced the defection as fraudulent. He clarified that the person shown by Wambaka has never held any leadership position within the FDC in Legenya.

According to Waniaye, the actual FDC Sub County Chairman for Legenya is Alex Nandala Sojja, a dedicated party member in Budadiri East committed to ending NRM’s 40-year rule.

Waniaye further alleged that the disinformation campaign by the NRM administration is deliberately designed to undermine the FDC’s strong support in the district.

He suggested that the NRM administrators aim to mislead higher authorities into believing that NRM is gaining ground in Sironko, thereby justifying additional funds for their mobilization efforts.

In a recent radio interview in Mbale, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Secretary General of FDC, urged members to remain committed to the struggle. He stated that the party is planning a mass mobilization exercise and advised members to disregard any fake news intended to confuse them.
