KALIRO
Police in Kaliro have arrested a police officer identified as Sgt. Kyakwise Charles to aid in investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old student in Kaliro. The suspect, Kyakwise Charles, is attached to Kaliro Police Station.
The incident occurred at Kyani, Bumanya Sub-County in Kaliro District. The deceased has been identified as Mudago Sogo, a student of Kaliro Vocational Secondary School.
Initial findings indicate that on 8th March 2025, one Mutebi Godfrey, a resident of Kananzoki village, reported a case of cattle theft, specifically three bulls stolen by an unknown person. Police officers responded to the scene, and at the initial stages of the investigation, a sniffer dog was introduced. The dog traced the scent to a bar and led the handler to one Zigondo Bosco Pande, a known habitual thief.
ASP Michael Kasadha stated that the crowd following the police officers became rowdy and started pelting stones as they attempted to take mob action against the suspect.
Kasadha further explained that the police officers stayed inside with the suspect in an attempt to calm the situation. However, as the scuffle escalated, Sgt. Kyakwise Charles discharged a bullet, which struck and fatally injured Mudogo Sogo. The suspect was rescued and taken to Kaliro Police CPS. The victim died on the way to the hospital, and his body was taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem.
Kasadha mentioned that further investigations are ongoing to establish more facts.
However, speaking to residents who preferred to remain anonymous, they expressed disapproval of the police officer’s actions, stating that they believed the student should not have been shot. They added that they had wanted the thief to be beaten, as the community in Kaliro has been suffering from frequent cattle thefts.
