SOROTI CITY
Wilfred Ocen has been elected as the new Guild President of Soroti University, after a closely contested election with 272 votes.
His opponent, Samuel Muwala Kagadi, received 232 votes, a margin of 40 votes. The election that took place on Saturday, 22nd, March, 2025, saw 504 students voting, with three defective ballot papers.
In other election results, Ismail Wani Butiaba won the Guild Representative position for the School of Health Sciences with 198 votes, defeating Edmund Ceazar, who received 182.
Caroline Apio won the guild representative seat for government-sponsored students with 177 votes, defeating Brenda Nakiwere, who received 162.
Fredrick Sejemba won the guild representative post for the School of Engineering with 55 votes, defeating Edwin Amanya, who received 50 votes.
Morris Akandwanaho, the head of the University Electoral Commission, advised the incoming leadership to promote student welfare and collaborate closely with the university administration.
In his acceptance speech, Ocen promised to build on the previous leadership’s accomplishments while focusing on topics such as student welfare, research, innovation, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
He also named Florence Nalunkuma as his Vice President.
Meanwhile, Francis Kato, the Electoral Commissioner for Publicity, thanked the Electoral Commission for delivering a seamless and peaceful election process.
He also praised the Candidates for following the commission’s rules.
Kato urged the newly elected leadership to capitalize on this momentum, working to establish a strong reputation for the University and forward its strategic development.
The guild aspirants, including Samuel Muwala Kagadi, showed great promise and skillfully conveyed their manifestos during their campaigns, which lasted from March 4th to March 21st, 2025.
