The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) has responded to social media channels alleging that it is using chemical and barrel weapons on rebel White Army positions in the Upper Nile and Jonglei states of the northern region of South Sudan.

In a Friday, 28th March statement, the UPDF’s Acting Spokesperson, Col. Magezi says the UPDF has noted the unsubstantiated and misleading reports in some social media channels.

He says the allegations are false because the UPDF neither possesses chemical weapons and barrel bombs nor does it operate systems designed to deliver them.

“It should also be noted that the UPDF does not attack civilians or civilian objects. Great care is always taken to avoid this. The UPDF, using its proven precision strike capabilities endeavours to isolate and destroy only military targets,” he adds.

Magezi also argues that it is observed as well that the AI generated propaganda schemes against the UPDF presence in South Sudan are being perpetuated by Dr. Riek Machar and his allies.

“The naysayers should be ignored. UPDF involvement in South Sudan is with the full authorization and support of the South Sudan government,” he says.

There has been social media frenzy suggesting that President Salva Kiir has instructed the UPDF to go and finish the Nuer tribe in Nasir and other areas with the use of UN banned cluster bombs in Nasir.
