Mob Kills Police Officer, Chemonges at Funeral in Ibanda District

A police officer identified as No. 75290 PC Chemonges Suleiman, a 28-year-old officer attached to Bisheshe police station in Ibanda District has been killed by a mob during a funeral.

 

 

According to ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the senseless act of violence occurred on Sunday, 6th April, 2025 while the officer was guarding the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus, an inmate who died at Nyabuhikye Government prison, Ibanda District.

 

This took place at Kambogo Cell, Bisheshe Division, Ibanda district.

 

He says Chemonges was attacked at around 2:00PM by the mob that accused him of having participated in the arrest and subsequent detention of the deceased.

 

The deceased had been arrested over alleged murder and died while on remand at Nyabuhikye Government prison.

 

Despite firing warning shots, Chemonges was overpowered by a mob that descended on him and beat him to death.

 

Police responded to the scene, recovering an SMG rifle and 16 rounds of ammunition. PC Suleiman’s body was taken to the Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary. Investigations are ongoing.

 

 

In the latest update, Rusoke says 29 suspects have as of Monday, 7th April, 2025 been arrested and operation is ongoing to arrest other suspects.

 

“We want to assure the public that all suspects involved in the criminal act shall be arrested and brought to book,” says Rusoke.
