Over 30 students from Kirewa Senior Secondary School in Tororo District have been discharged from various health facilities following a road accident that occurred while they were travelling for a patriotism pass-out ceremony on 8th April, 2025.
According to medical authorities, 34 have been discharged as most of the injured students have shown significant improvement.
Tororo General Hospital, which initially received 40 of the victims, now has only three students still under close medical supervision.
Dr. Thomas Ochari, the Tororo General Hospital superintendent, confirmed that the remaining patients are out of danger and are expected to be discharged soon.
The incident occurred when over 120 students were traveling aboard an overloaded Isuzu truck, registration number UBF 785R, to Mahanga Senior Secondary School in Nagongera Town Council when the vehicle reportedly overturned, throwing the students off the truck.
The injured were rushed to several health facilities, including Nagongera Health Centre IV, Mulanda Hospital, and Tororo General Hospital.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing. As of Wednesday evening, no arrests had been made, though the truck remains impounded at Tororo Central Police Station.
Authorities have reiterated calls for stricter enforcement of school transport safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
