KATAKWI: Parents Lock Out Head Teacher Over UPE Funds

By Emmanuel Olinga

KATAKWI

Parents of Abela Primary School on April 22, 2025, locked out the Head Teacher, Isaiah Euchu out of his office due to alleged diversion of UPE monies earmarked for curricular activities.

The disgruntled parents who stormed the school locked out the head teacher, demanding answers for his failure to take pupils to the athletics competition hosted at Apuuton Primary School on 17th April 2025.

A group of parents confronted the head teacher, accusing him of intending to fail the school because it’s not properly managed as evident that lessons are skipped and 4,000,000 milling shillings for MTN mast are not clearly accounted for.

Parents also complained about the costs of 3,000 shillings for pupils to get tap water for drinking, despite the fact that the students bring their own water containers from home.

Richard Obore and Felister Amulit, parish councilors for Abela, and Jimmy Okello, district councilor for Getom Sub County, claim that the school has been mishandled and therefore urge that the head teacher be transferred somewhere else.

Ben Odeya, PTA chairperson, threatened to resign as PTA chairperson, claiming that the head teacher does not communicate with the PTA or SMC. He also stated that the absence of pupils from physical activities demonstrated a type of mismanagement in the school, necessitating the departure of the head teacher.

Amos Omoligai, treasurer of School Management Committee Abela Primary School, says the school has experienced numerous obstacles due to communication gaps and the lack of teamwork, particularly from head teacher who has taken full responsibility for all committees in order to divert funds.

Irene, the secretary of Education and Community Based Services who chaired the meeting, stated that the act was uncalled for and directed the Head Teacher to organize an AGM before the end of the first term.

Geoffrey Omolo LCV, emphasized the need for clear UPE responsibility, noting that mismanagement of UPE monies will result in an audit.

Meanwhile, Euchu who also serves on the Getom Athletic Committee, dismissed the claims against him as false. He also blamed the Chairperson PTA for demobilizing parents from sending learners to Abela primary school.

This publication has learnt that Ben Odeya PTA Abela Primary School is the second to resign, following Charles Elungat Okim SMC, due to disorganized work with Head Teacher since 2019, when he was posted to Abela Primary School.
