MBALE CITY

Mbale Regional Referral Hospital on Wednesday, 23rd April, 2025 officially launched the construction of a new obstetric theatre, a development aimed at boosting maternal health services in the region.

The construction, funded by Seed Global Health, is expected to be completed within three months.

Speaking to our reporter during the launch, the acting Director of Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, Dr. Dan Mwayafu, described the project as a major milestone for the hospital.

“This is a big achievement. The obstetric theatre will greatly improve service delivery, especially in handling emergency maternal cases,” Dr. Mwayafu said.

He noted that, the new facility is expected to reduce congestion and ease pressure on the existing theatre, enabling faster and more efficient care for expectant mothers.

“For years, Mbale hospital operated with just one theatre, handling 10 surgeries a day causing delays for mothers in critical condition,” Mwayafu said.

Mwayafu says he is grateful for the support from the Ministry of Health and Seed Global Health that has seen the launch of the construction of the new theatre facility.

“This expansion is expected to, Reduce emergency wait times, Lower maternal and infant mortality and Improve overall service delivery.” He said.

Dr. Mwayafu highlighted the urgent need for more midwives and doctors, with recruitment already in motion.

Dr. Kadondi Dinah, in charge of the Obstetric Theatre, told this publication that, the upgrade is a game-changer: “One operating table was never enough. This will save lives.” She said.

Dr. Peter Wanyera called it a “milestone for the department,” as they’ve often had to turn away emergency cases from neighboring centers due to space limitations.

Dr. Richard Mugahi, Commissioner for Reproductive & Maternal Health, commended the collaboration between Busitema University, the hospital team, and development partners.

“Mbale Regional Hospital serves the entire community. If you have any concerns, please report them directly to the administration. We’re committed to improving care for all,” he said.
