Soroti City based Lawyer, Joshua Okello has sued China State Construction Engineering Corporation over death of Rajiv Ruparelia

Soroti City based Human Rights Lawyer has taken to court a Chinese Construction Company over the death of Rajiv Ruparelia, tycoon Ruparelia’s son in a car accident on Saturday morning, 3rd May, 2025 at 2:44AM.

Joshua Okello in a Miscellaneous Cause No. 122 of 2025 lodged at the Civil Division of the High Court Holden at Kampala sues China State Construction Engineering Corporation, the company responsible for the construction of the Kajjansi – Munyonyo road where deceased Rajiv met his death.

The Suit dated Friday, 9th May, 2025 seeks an order restraining the Company’s Agents from placing barriers along the road at night. Rajiv died after crashing into barriers placed at the Busabala Flyover traffic lights, located in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District.

Okello also wants a declaration that putting barriers in the middle of the road interrupts traffic and causes accidents leading to loss of lives.

Besides the suits intends to compel the Company to complete the construction of the road and an order of mandamus directed to the Company to construct standard roads.

The lawyer, renowned for defending Speaker Anita Among in international Courts over her sanctions, seeks costs for the suit.

Okello refers to what Andrew Mwenda told the Media shortly after Rajiv’s death that, “I think he did not know the barrier because he had just recently returned from London. The car crashed down and there was a ball of fire. He and the car were incinerated.”

Police confirm too that the driver lost control of the vehicle after colliding with temporary pavements installed at the roundabout section of the flyover.

The vehicle subsequently overturned and caught fire, leading to the instant death of the driver, identified as Mr. Rajiv Ruparelia.

Okello argues that the fatal accident that claimed the life of Rajiv Ruparelia exposes gross negligence in road construction management and the Company through its Agents should be held liable for placing barriers without proper signage or warnings.

“That in view of the foregoing, I am highly apprehensive that unless this Honourable Court grants the orders and declarations prayed for in the Notice of motion, it will not correct this anomaly and will cause an injustice to the Applicant or public at large,” argues Okello.

It is not known yet when the Court will set dates for hearing of this Application, that many citizens saw coming.
