The Minister of Lands, Sam Mayanja, on Monday, 26th May, 2025 canceled the land title held by Kabwangasi Secondary School and returned the land to the community.
The disputed land measures 96 acres and has been a source of conflict between the community and the school for a long time.
Locals had accused the school of illegally grabbing their land without compensation, prompting the minister’s intervention.
During a dialogue meeting held on Monday between the school and the community, school authorities claimed that the land was given to Kabwangasi Mosque in 1984 by the community before the secondary school was established.
However, community members acknowledged the school’s claim but argued that the school had encroached on more land than agreed upon, totaling 96 acres, without paying for it before titling it in 1995.
In response, Minister Mayanja described the land title as unlawful and ordered a survey to demarcate only 4 acres of land to the school. The remaining land will be returned to the community.
This decision aims to resolve the long-standing dispute and address the community’s concerns about land ownership.
