Residents of two sub-counties in Namisindwa District are in shock after a mudslide and rolling rocks destroyed their crops and homes during heavy rainfall on Friday, 30th May, 2025.
The affected sub-counties are Bupoto and Bumbo.
According to Simon Wefunya, a resident of Bumbo Sub-County, the heavy rainfall, which lasted from 2 pm to 6 pm, left many people without shelter.
He reported that the mudslide destroyed about 10 houses and crops, including cabbage, onions, and beans, in villages such as Bumwali 1, Bumwali 2, Kololo Trading Centre, and Buwanzala.
Damascus Makeme, the LC III Chairperson of Bupoto Sub-County, stated that rolling stones from Mount Elgon National Park destroyed 13 houses and crops in villages like Wenakela, Butindui 1, and Butindui 2. Fortunately, no lives were lost in both sub-counties.
Makeme urged concerned leaders to provide support to the affected residents.
Jackson Wakwaika, the Namisindwa District LC V Chairperson, instructed local leaders from the affected sub-counties to conduct an assessment and submit a report to the District Disaster Management Team for response.
