NAMUTUMBA: Mother, Daughter Arrested for Dumping Newborn Baby in Latrine

Police in Namutumba district, is investigating circumstances, under which a 58-year-old mother and her 22-year-old senior four drop-out daughter, were involved in an attempted infanticide (killing newborn baby) on Sunday 28th July,2025.

 

The incident happened on Sunday 27th July, 2025, at Bwoite B cell, Bugabula ward, Ivukula town council in Namutumba district.

 

According to police, Wambewo Rose, a teacher, took her pregnant daughter, Kyozira Deborah, to a clinic (name withheld) for treatment, but while there, she started feeling stomach upset that was later established to be labour pain, and rushed to the latrine only to come back bleeding, causing suspicion from the nurse and locals.

 

Busoga East police spokesperson SP Kafayo Michael, says, eventually, they heard the baby crying from inside the latrine, prompting quick intervention from locals, who informed authorities who swiftly swung into action.

 

“Namutumba police, Iganga fire brigade department with the help of the locals, rescued the baby, while still alive and it has been rushed to Nsinze health Center in Namutumba as investigations continue,” said SP Michael Kafayo.

 

By the time of filing this story, Wambewo Rose and Kyozira Deborah were under custody in Namutumba police station. However Kyozira would be given bond to enable her to breastfeed the baby, according to police.
