The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has already printed 100,000 National IDs for the first phase that will soon be released to the public.
This was revealed by Claire Ollama, a NIRA registrar today Monday, 11th August, 2025 while addressing the media at Uganda Media Center.
She says at least 9.1 million Ugandan have so far registered for the renewal of national identification cards according to NIRA following the ongoing country wide mass exercise.
“We have registered 9.1 million Ugandans in the two months, of which eight million were renewals and 800,000 were first timer and the rest are those with national identification numbers and applying for their first IDs,” Ollama said.
At least 15.8 million national identity cards are expected to expire by August 2025.The mass ongoing registration is meant to renew the national IDs but also to add advanced security features for easy identification.
NIRA Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo recently said only 27.4 million Ugandans are currently registered of the 45.9 million according to last year’s census.
