Katakwi district has begun to experience damages as a result of the present heavy downpour, which has occurred over the course of nearly two weeks submerging Crop gardens, residences, and even roads have been cut off owing to water-logging.

Our correspondent observed parts of the villages of Goshen, Palam, and Dokomer prisons in Katakwi town council and Palam Sub County, respectively, where the situation is terrible, with administrators registering drowned crops and collapsed buildings.

According to James Stephen Ilakut, of the LC one defense Dokomer cell, the floods have inundated over 20 crop gardens, and the committee has reported ten buildings destroyed as a result of the flooding.

Alex Omulen, a resident of Goshen, Western Ward, Katakwi Town Council, says his family of six is now living in a single kitchen after his two main houses collapsed down.

He claims that the floods have resulted in a double loss of house property and garden crops, and that his Shs 300,000 television was destroyed when a wall crashed down.

Julius Audo, a Goshen resident, claims that moist floors caused by flooding have led him to incur frequent medical expenses for his expectant wife, Irene Atino.

Anna Grace Imalingat, a Goshen cell resident, says her family has had to eat only one meal per day since their cassava, groundnut, and potato gardens have been swamped and rotting.

According to Grace Alupo, a resident of Goshen Cell, they are more likely to suffer from starvation and waterborne sickness, as seen by small children suffering from cold weather-related illnesses.

According to Kam Okello, interim LC one chairperson Goshen Cell who also serves as General Secretary Dokomer Cell, floods have ruined around 100 gardens of garden crops and ten residences.

He encouraged the district disaster committee to help by contributing food relief, but also noted that water running from the Bindadi sale route, washed by blood, necessitated immediate intervention.

Meanwhile Geoffrey Omolo, LCV chairperson Katakwi district also a member of district Disaster committee says the floods have submerged several gardens and cut off roads in the district.  He also said some of the devastated roads like Bidandi Ssali road are among the 12 Kms roads in town council to be worked on.

However, Katakwi locals are urging government, through the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness and the Prime Minister’s Office, to provide them with tarpaulins, gumboots, and chlorine for water purification to prevent people from contracting waterborne infections.
