The Elgon region police have today Friday, 22nd August, 2025 released an official statement regarding the total death toll arising from the recent floods that have affected the region.

Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, while addressing the media at Inzu yamasaba head offices located at Malukhu Industrial city division in Mbale City, said five people have lost their lives in the disaster.

Taitika reported that three people died on Sunday, with two fatalities in Mbale City and one in Sironko. On Wednesday, two more people died in Bulambuli, bringing the total death toll to five.

The victims included Shedrack Modulo, 55, and Vivian Nagudi, 12, from Nabweya Ward in Northern Division, Mbale City, who died on Sunday.

The police have recovered all five bodies and handed them over to their relatives for burial.

Taitika urged residents living in disaster-prone areas in the Bugisu region to temporarily relocate to safer areas until the government can implement permanent solutions.

During the press conference, Steven Masiga, the spokesperson for Inzu Yamasaba, echoed the police’s concerns and called on the government to develop lasting solutions for people living in high-risk areas.

Masiga noted that the government had initiated a resettlement program for residents in disaster-prone areas, but it was suspended for unknown reasons.
