Former Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Principal Professor Wasswa Balunywa has been released from Luzira Prison after the Anti-Corruption.

Prof. Balunywa had spent three nights in Luzira on remand before the Anti-corruption court judge Racheal Nakyazze granted him temporary freedom this morning the 5th of September 2025.

Judge Nakyazze allowed Prof. Balunywa to regain his liberty upon depositing Shs.5 million cash in the first case where he is accused of irregularly appointing unqualified staff and Shs. 10 million in the second case which stems from alleged illegal mass recruitment at Makerere University Business School.

Each of his sureties was bonded at Shs.50 million non cash in the first case and Shs.100 million for the second case.

The magistrate also said that his passport and land title in his name remain in court custody and scheduled 15th October 2025 for mention and pre-trial proceedings for both cases.

According to charge sheets filed by outgoing Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo, Prof. Balunywa allegedly overstepped his authority as MUBS principal between 2020 and 2023by appointing 103 academic staff,17 administrative staff, and 69 support staff without following procedures of the Institution’s  Appointments committee.
