MBALE CITY

The Uganda Police Force has provided an explanation for the bullets and tear gas heard at the Mbale Police Barracks on Friday afternoon, 5th September, 2025.

According to Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, the explosions were part of a training exercise for over 100 police officers undergoing Public Order Management (POMA) training ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The training, which started on Tuesday, was concluding today, Friday and included a simulation to test the officers’ knowledge and skills in managing public order.

Taitika assured the public that there was no cause for alarm, urging residents of Mbale city to remain calm. The police spokesperson emphasized that the exercise was routine and necessary to prepare officers for potential security challenges during the elections.

Regional police commander Elgon, SSP Samuel Asiimwe says the training is timely as the country is heading to serious season involving elections of all categories.

He says the violence which was seen in the recent NRM election must stop and not be allowed in the coming 2026 general elections.

Asiimwe also adds that anyone who will bring violence in the coming general election, will be dealt with accordingly.
