Electoral Commission (EC) Chairman Simon Byabakama has today Wednesday, 24th September, 2025 officially declared Nathan James Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) duly nominated to contest the 2026 presidential elections.
Mafabi joins incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, Peasants Party’s Robert Kasibante, and Conservative Party’s Elton Joseph Mabirizi in the race for Uganda’s top office.
While speaking to media shortly after nomination, Mafabi also focused on youth employment, pledging that every university graduate would receive a one million-shilling startup package.
He emphasized investing in productive sectors, sending development funds directly to local communities to curb corruption, and expanding sports infrastructure in schools. He positioned himself as a unifying candidate, urging Ugandans to embrace change after nearly 40 years under President Museveni.
In his press briefing Mafabi has called on Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda to consider running for Uganda’s presidency.
He also criticized Uganda’s healthcare system, accusing it of serving mostly the well-connected.
“People go to India for medication, but those are mostly MPs or those close to the regime. What about your brothers, sisters, and grandmothers in the village? When you vote me, we shall make sure we elevate all hospitals in Uganda,” Mafabi said.
“Lukwago wanted to be the President but he sees himself as a Lord Mayor. I would be happy to see Lukwago or Ssemujju on the ballot standing for the Presidency,” Mafabi told journalists as he headed to the Electoral Commission for his nomination today.
Mafabi said his campaign will be issue-based, not confrontational.
“We are coming into this election with no antagonism toward anyone,” he said.
