MBALE CITY
The Elgon Region Police Commander, Samuel Asiimwe, has today Thursday, September 25, 2025 apologized for the clash between a section of police officers and NUP supporters celebrating their Principal’s nomination in Mbale City.
During the celebration of Robert Kyagulanyi’s nomination in Mbale city on Wednesday, police officers commanded by Afande Mustafa Mulalira, the Mbale Central Police Station O/C Operations used teargas and fired bullets dispersing the non- violent supporters at Mbale city NUP office.
The fracas started 30 minutes after police had allowed the NUP supporters celebrate the nomination of their candidate. From nowhere, Police officers suddenly came in causing an altercation that led to the use of teargas to disperse the supporters and in the process tearing their poster.
While speaking to the media today at the regional block during a media engagement, Asiimwe condemned the police officers’ actions and assured the public that an investigation is underway.
“The police are investigating the matter to determine the circumstances surrounding the use of tear gas,” Asiimwe said.
Meanwhile, the Police Spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke has released a statement condemning the police actions of tearing NUP Presidential posters in in Mbale City and the Central Business District of Kampala City on Wednesday, 24th September, 2025 saying investigations are underway.

The Elgon region police have been working to improve their response to public gatherings, emphasizing professionalism and respect for human rights. Recently, they conducted training on crowd management, focusing on dialogue and de-escalation techniques.
