Residents of Masaba Sub-county in Sironko district have given the district authorities an ultimatum of one week to explain why the Mudoko Gravity Flow Scheme project has not been completed.
A landslide in August damaged the pipes connecting water from the source to the community, and although the district’s water engineering department delivered new pipes for repairs, no progress has been made.
According to Morris Kizamba, the area councilor, the locals are currently forced to drink dirty water, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases.
Kizamba stated that despite writing to the district engineering department, they have received no response.
Residents Sam Madoi and Caroline Kwaga have threatened to take drastic measures, including setting fire to the pipes left in their area, unless the district authorities address the issue within the given timeframe.
In response, Alex Gidudu, the Sironko district water engineer, apologized for the delay, citing the rainy weather as the reason.
He assured that the engineers had commenced repairs and promised that water would be flowing by the end of the following week.
The Mudoko Gravity Flow Scheme project, which costs over 20 million shillings to construct, aims to supply clean water to the people of Masaba Sub-county.
