Police has corrected the number of passengers that perished in a road carnage in the wee hours of Wednesday, 22nd October, 2025 at Kitaleba Village, near Asili Farm, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
Earlier, the Directorate of traffic and road safety as well as the police traffic spokesman, SP, Michael Kananura had put the number of fatalities at 63.
However, in a revised statement Kananura says the current number of the dead is 46, according to updated report from the Kiryandogo hospital.
Kananura noted in a press statement that the initial tally may have been inaccurate because several victims found unconscious at the crash scene were mistakenly included in the fatality count.
The horrible road crash occurred at 12:15 a.m. local time near Asili Farm in Kitaleba Village. Police confirmed that 46 people died on spot and several others were injured.
Meanwhile, SP Kananura Michael, the police spokesman for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, confirmed the revised fatality toll of 46 deaths, based on updated hospital information.
Kananura noted in a press statement that the initial tally may have been inaccurate because several victims found unconscious at the crash scene were mistakenly included in the fatality count.
Kananura confirmed that the accident occurred at 12:15am and it involved four motor vehicles; UBF 614X, Isuzu bus (Nile Star Coaches), CGO 5132AB 07 Toyota surf, UBK 647C Tata Lorry &UAM 045V, Isuzu bus (Planet Company).
Kananura said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of UBF 614X Isuzu bus, travelling from Kampala towards Gulu, attempted to overtake the Tata Lorry (UBK 647C) at Kitaleba Village.
“Simultaneously, the Isuzu bus (UAM 045V), travelling from the opposite direction, was also attempting to overtake the Toyota Surf (CGO 5132AB 07). In the process, both buses met head-on during the overtaking manoeuvres” Afande Kananura said.
He added: “One of the drivers swerved in an attempt to avoid collision, but unfortunately this resulted in a head on and side collision, causing a chain reaction that led to other vehicles losing control and overturning several times. As a result, 63 people lost lives, all occupants from involved vehicles and several others sustained injuries”.
Kananura noted that later Police arrived at the scene promptly and transported the injured to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical facilities for medical attention.
Meanwhile, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the State House Comptroller to immediately provide Shs 5m to the family of each person killed in a fatal road crash and Shs 1m to each person injured.
The directive followed an accident that killed 46 people Wednesday on the Kampala–Gulu highway. The president announced the aid and offered his condolences in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, late Wednesday.
“I have learnt with sadness about the tragic accident that occurred this morning along the Kampala–Gulu highway, claiming many lives,” President Museveni wrote, urging all road users to “exercise utmost caution to prevent such tragedies.”
