Sironko District Struggles to Pay Road Gangs

SIRONKO

Sironko District is facing challenges in paying its 132 road gang Members due to inadequate funding from the central government.

The road gangs, employed on contract by the district local government, are responsible for rehabilitating and maintaining district roads through tasks such as slashing and drainage opening.

However, some councilors have questioned the effectiveness of the road gangs, citing instances where district roads have remained unmaintained for years.

Titus Wombilo, councilor representing Bumasifwa sub-county, and Robert Masaba, councilor for Buteza Town Council, expressed concerns that most road gangs are not productive due to delayed payments, with some workers going up to five months without pay.

Sam Gidongo, the acting district engineer while speaking to our reporter today Wednesday, 5th November, 2025 attributed the payment delays to insufficient funding, stating that the district receives only 63 million shillings annually to pay the 132 road gangs, with each gang earning 250,000 shillings.

Gidongo explained that this amount is inadequate to cover the payments for all road gangs throughout the year.
