Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), in partnership with Makerere University and Japanese company Teroo- Litech, is set to introduce advanced technologies aimed at transforming sewerage waste management in the country.
The development was revealed on Friday 14th November 2025 during a stakeholder meeting held in Kampala, where Dr. Swaibu Semiyaga, a senior lecturer at Makerere University’s Department of Environmental Management, expressed concern over the inadequacy of current waste management systems.
According to Dr. Semiyaga, common systems such as septic tanks and pit latrines are no longer sufficient to handle the increasing volumes of wastewater generated, especially in schools, markets, rental apartments, and other densely populated areas.
He noted that 85% of Kampala’s population is not connected directly to the city’s central water treatment plant, leaving a huge gap in safe waste disposal.
Dr. Semiyaga further revealed that the Japanese partner, Teroo Litech, has proposed three innovative waste treatment technologies that will first be piloted within Kampala.
Once proven effective, these technologies will be rolled out across the country to strengthen Uganda’s sanitation and public health systems.
KCCA says the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize the city’s sanitation infrastructure and reduce the environmental and health risks posed by poor waste disposal.
