Police in Bugweri district, on Monday 24th November arrested 8 people to aid in investigations into the election-related violence that happened in the village of Walanga, Bubenge and Bukotela, in Igombe Sub County that started on Friday night.

The arrests follow allegations that supporters of the incumbent Bugweri Member of Parliament, Abdul Katuntu vandalized posters and beat up supporters of NRM’s Wandera Sadala -a former RDC, who is also contesting for the same seat.

According to Busoga East police spokesperson, ASP Michael Kasadha, the violence included vandalizing campaign posters of various candidates and theft.

Some of the victims are undergoing treatment at Iganga General Hospital after Katuntu’s supporters allegedly pelted stones at them.

“Katuntu and his supporters were returning from a rally in the evening hours and then stick-wielding men started beating us indiscriminately which forced us to close our businesses to go into hiding to save our lives,” said a one Kawala Faridah.

ASP Kasadha called upon all those that were affected in the scuffle to go and report to police and added that more arrests would be made as investigations continue into the matter.

“As police we encourage peaceful elections and anyone who fails to abide by the election laws set by the Electoral commission will be arrested and arraigned before the courts of law.” Emphasized Kasadha.
