NRM’s Omari Yasin is now unopposed

National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has strongly condemned the Electoral Commission over what he described as a deliberate move to block opposition candidates in Makindye Division.

This after the Electoral commission on Monday 5th January 2026 disqualified 11 candidates from the Makindye mayoral race leaving only NRM’s Omari Yasin unopposed after he filed petitions against the other contenders.

The disqualifications were based on several grounds including failure to secure the required 20 signatures from each parish, registration of non-residents in Makindye among other electoral irregularities.

In a statement, Bobi Wine said the Commission, under Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, has once again disqualified NUP’s candidate for Makindye Division Mayor, Lusagala Bosco, among other party candidates.

The decision, he noted, effectively leaves the ruling NRM candidate unopposed.

Kyagulanyi said that whatever Museveni and Byabakama are looking for, they will definitely get and added that the EC is working in the interests of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the ruling party.

He argued that the repeated disqualification of opposition candidates is further evidence of a compromised electoral process aimed at silencing dissent and maintaining the status quo.

Kyagulanyi said such actions only strengthen the resolve of those fighting for change, insisting that Ugandans have every reason to continue pushing for a free and fair political environment.
