Tororo’s Political Earthquake: 5 Incumbent MP’s Lose Seats in 2026 General Elections

TORORO

Tororo District’s political landscape has dramatically shifted following the January 15, 2026 general elections, where at least five incumbent members of Parliament were unseated in fiercely contested races.

 

The outcome signals a new chapter for the district, long known for its vibrant and unpredictable politics.

 

In Tororo North County, Forum for Democratic Change stalwart, Geoffrey Ekanya bowed out after garnering 6,962 votes, falling to the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Simon Nicholas Owino, who secured a commanding 14,321 Votes.

 

Tororo Municipality NRM’s Yeri Apollo Ofwono lost his seat after polling 4,829 votes, edged out by independent candidate Shyam Jay Tanna, who triumphed with 5,781 votes.

 

Dr Emmanuel Otala Otiam, the incumbent Mp for West Budama South constituency was defeated after polling 11,428 votes, narrowly losing to NRM’s George Oketcho, who secured 12,050 votes.

 

Incumbent Fox Odoi Oywelowo of West Budama North-East managed 7,618 votes but was swept aside by NRM’s Richard Owere Machicka, who polled 12,042 Votes.

 

Tororo woman Mp seat; In one of the tightest races, outspoken Legislator Sarah Achieng Opendi lost by a razor-thin margin, securing 78,507 votes against Independent candidate Angella Akoth’s 78,542 votes.

 

The defeats mark one of the most significant electoral shape-ups in Tororo’s recent history.

 

With both NRM candidates and independents making strong gains, the district’s representation in Parliament now reflects a blend of ruling party dominance and independent voices.
