Kenyan President William Ruto has nominated Canon Dr. Ida Betty Odinga, E.G.H., widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, for appointment as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The nomination, which requires approval by the National Assembly, highlights Kenya’s ongoing commitment to global environmental leadership.
The announcement was made in a formal statement dated Friday, January 23, 2026, signed by Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service, Felix K. Koskei.
Under the President’s constitutional prerogative, senior diplomatic postings within Kenya’s Foreign Service are appointed with parliamentary oversight, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
Ida Odinga, widely recognised as a distinguished educationist, civic leader, and advocate for social justice and gender equity, began her career in the education sector.
She served as a graduate teacher at Highway Secondary School and Kenya High School, inspiring generations of young Kenyans and fostering a lifelong commitment to education and public service.
Her influence extends beyond the classroom. In the early 1990s, during Kenya’s push to end one-party rule, Ida emerged as a leading voice for democratic reform.
She was the founding Chairperson of the League of Kenya Women Voters, an organisation that amplified women’s voices in national affairs and championed civic participation.
Throughout her public life, she has advocated for women’s empowerment, freedom of expression, and inclusive development.
In addition to her civic contributions, Ida has held leadership roles in family enterprises such as East African Spectre, a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder manufacturing company, contributing to Kenya’s energy sector.
Her work in education, civic engagement, and business has earned her two Honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) degrees, as well as Kenya’s highest civilian honour, the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) in 2018.
She has also received the Trailblazer Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Human Achievers Foundation.
Her appointment to UNEP is expected to reinforce Kenya’s position in international environmental diplomacy, amplifying the country’s voice on climate action, sustainability, and governance. Kenya hosts UNEP headquarters in Nairobi and has long been influential in shaping global environmental policy.
Ida Odinga was the lifelong spouse of Raila Odinga, who passed away on October 15, 2025, in India at the age of 80. Raila, fondly known as “Baba,” served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and remained a pivotal figure in Kenyan politics.
He championed democratic governance, social justice, and national inclusion, inspiring generations across East Africa despite several unsuccessful presidential bids.
Pending parliamentary approval, Ida Odinga’s nomination marks a significant diplomatic appointment and underscores Kenya’s focus on experienced leadership in advancing its global environmental agenda.
