TORORO
Former contestant for the Tororo Woman Member of Parliament seat, Nyafamba Barbra Marcy, has sounded a stern warning against the growing influence of money in Uganda’s politics, saying it undermines genuine leadership and erodes the moral values that hold communities together.
Addressing Makirok Amaber women’s group on Thursday, 29th January, 2026 in Katandi village, Kirewa sub-county, Nyafamba expressed concern that the misuse of money is distorting not only politics but also religion and cultural institutions.
She noted that many leaders today win elections not because of their ability to serve but because they buy votes, a practice she described as both shameful and destructive.
“Money itself is not bad – it can save lives and promote development but it becomes dangerous when misused,” Nyafamba told the gathering.
“What we are witnessing is corruption of politics, infiltration of religion, and distortion of culture. This is not the Uganda we should be building.”
Her remarks come at a time when the monetization of politics has become a recurring concern across the country, with analysts warning that vote-buying and financial influence are weakening democratic institutions and silencing genuine voices of service.
Nyafamba congratulated all political candidates who succeeded in Tororo District, saying she looks forward to working with them to advance community development.
She emphasized the need for unity among leaders, regardless of political differences, to ensure that service delivery reaches the grassroots.
In her appeal to government, Nyafamba urged the immediate operationalisation of newly created administrative units in the district, arguing that effective decentralization would bring services closer to the people.
She stressed that voters in Tororo and beyond deserve accessible healthcare, education, and infrastructure, which can only be achieved if administrative units are fully functional.
