TORORO: Scammers Impersonate Officials to Dupe SACCO Leaders

Residents of Tororo District have been issued a stern warning about a growing scam involving fraudsters posing as government officials.

Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Amula Albert revealed that these conmen are targeting SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization) leaders, exploiting their trust and the ongoing Parish Development Model (PDM) program.

In a statement issued on 3rd March, 2026, Amula disclosed that the scammers are misleading PDM SACCO chairpersons into transferring money to an Airtel number registered under the name Asiimwe Scovia.

They falsely promise the victims permits and motorcycles as part of government support initiatives.

“At least five individuals have fallen victim to this deceitful scheme, including leaders from Southern Ward, Nagongera Town Council, Siwa Sub-county, and Rubongi Sub-county,” he noted.

Amula emphasized that the government has not yet procured motorcycles for SACCO chairpersons nationwide, urging community members to remain vigilant.

“We want to protect our people from these fraudsters who prey on their aspirations and trust,” he cautioned.

To combat this rising issue, Amula has instructed parish chiefs and sub-county chiefs to maintain open communication with Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and the office of the RDC.

This collaboration aims to educate SACCO leaders on recognizing and avoiding such scams.

Additionally, the deputy RDC pledged to escalate the matter to local law enforcement, encouraging victims to report these incidents.

“Reporting is crucial in helping police track down these con artists misusing officials’ names for personal gain,” he stated.

As the community rallies together against these unscrupulous activities, authorities remind the public to verify any claims regarding government support before taking action.
