MBALE CITY
The Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) organized a debate championship for secondary schools in Mbale City, attracting nine schools out of more than 30 schools in the city on Monday, 9th March, 2026.
Nkoma Secondary School delivered an impressive performance, winning the Public Speaking and Poetry categories and finishing second overall in the Debate competition.
In the Public Speaking category, Mwanga Akram from Nkoma SS emerged as the Best Public Speaker. Hadija Hassan from Mbale SS finished second, while Guo Samimu secured third place.
In the Poetry category, Ocheing Sharrot Kakai from Nkoma SS emerged as the best performer. Namulondo Firdaus of Nakaloke SS finished second, while Nakasingye Hadijah from Mbale High School came in third place. The debate category was won by Mbale Secondary School.
The outstanding performer in debate was Innocent Makhite from Mbale SS, followed by Wakameri Gideon and Nafuna Monica, both also from Mbale SS.
During the ceremony, the Mbale City Coordinator of UNSA, Tom Etonu handed over trophies and awards to the best performers in each category in the presence of students from participating schools.
Mr. Etonu appreciated the schools that took part in the championship, noting that such activities help learners engage in discussions about issues affecting their communities. “Debate competitions prepare students to become responsible and thoughtful leaders for the next generation,” he said.
Mr. Wamono Asidu, the Deputy Head Teacher of Nkoma SS who represented the Head Teacher, congratulated the Debate Club members for consistently raising the school’s flag high. He pledged full support to ensure students continue benefiting from such activities, noting that the Debate Club has made the school proud.
Mr. Ntege Ramadhan encouraged more students to join the Debate Club, saying it sharpens thinking skills and prepares learners for the future. Meanwhile, the club patron, Madam Nambozo Christine, noted that Nkoma SS’s success in such competitions is a result of dedication and proper preparation.
She added that debate, public speaking, and poetry activities have greatly improved students’ communication and leadership skills.
