Three people have been killed and eight others injured in a tragic head-on crash along the Kampala–Gulu Highway late Friday night, 20th March, 2026 highlighting once again the dangers of reckless driving on one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 PM in Kalule, Nyimbwa Sub-county, when a Toyota Hiace taxi collided with a Tata lorry. Police preliminary investigations indicate that the lorry driver attempted to overtake a line of vehicles in the dark, crossing into the opposite lane and colliding directly with the oncoming taxi.
Eyewitness Reports
Residents in Nkondo Village, near the crash site, described a scene of chaos. “The sound of the crash was deafening,” said one witness. “By the time we reached, the taxi was crushed, and people were trapped inside. It was terrifying.”
Police confirmed that all three fatalities were male passengers in the taxi. The eight injured, many of whom sustained fractures and head injuries, were rushed to Luwero Hospital and Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency treatment. Some remain in critical condition.
Police Statement
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said the accident was caused by reckless overtaking. “We continue to urge motorists to drive responsibly, especially at night. Dangerous overtaking and speeding are among the leading causes of accidents on our highways,” he emphasized.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Luwero Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. The wrecked vehicles were towed to Bombo Police Station as investigations continue. Authorities are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash to provide information to assist the ongoing investigation.
Road Safety Concerns
The Kampala–Gulu Highway, connecting central Uganda to the northern region, has in recent months recorded several fatal accidents. Police and transport authorities blame heavy traffic, speeding, poor visibility at night, and risky overtaking maneuvers for the rising number of crashes.
Authorities have renewed calls for drivers to strictly observe traffic rules, maintain safe speeds, and avoid overtaking in unsafe conditions. “Every reckless maneuver on this highway puts lives at risk. We urge all road users to exercise caution,” Twiineamazima added.
