Police has tracked down and arrested four suspected phone and bag snatchers in their criminal hideout, within the Busega swamp found in Wakiso district.
According to SP Rachael Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, the intelligence led operation that led to the arrests took place on 20th March, 2026.
This follows rampant phone and bag snatching along the Kampala–Masaka Highway, particularly within the Busega–Kyengera swamp corridor.
She says the investigations started on 17th March 2026, when a case of robbery was reported at Kyengera Police Station by a businesswoman and resident of Namagoma Kisozi, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.
It is alleged that her laptop bag containing Uganda Shillings 5,340,000, two smartphones valued at Shs1,300,000, and a National Identity Card were stolen.
Following the report, an intelligence-led operation was conducted on 20th/03/2026 by a police task team targeting identified criminal hideouts within the Busega swamp. This led to the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of 20 iPhones and two Tecno phones from a makeshift structure in the swamp.
The suspects have been identified as; Muwesi John, a 33-year-old male resident of Busega, Mbazanyi Saka, a 25-year-old resident of Nateete, Kabuka Stephen, a 23-year-old male resident of Busega and unnamed 17-year-old male resident of Busega.
Kawala says the suspects are currently in police custody pending prosecution adding that efforts are ongoing to trace and identify the rightful owners of the recovered devices, as well as to apprehend additional suspects.
