National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched a targeted restoration process in Masaka City through community sensitisation, profiling and mapping wetland users in Ndyabusole and Kalagala-Nakayiba wetland systems.

According to a statement issued by NEMA today, 15th April, 2026, Joint teams identified illegal wetland activities, including cultivation, coffee nurseries, settlements, and digging of water drainage channels despite existing legal restrictions on these activities.

Following the exercise, that took place over the weekend, Environment Restoration Orders will soon be issued to encroachers, with a 21-day ultimatum for them to voluntarily vacate from the degraded wetland sections.

NEMA says local leaders have been tasked to mobilize communities as government intensifies efforts to restore wetlands and protect vital ecosystems warning that non-compliance will lead to eviction, demolition, and prosecution.
