Seven passengers have been confirmed dead, while several others are severely injured after a Nile Star Bus collided with a trailer lorry at Purongo Town Council in Nwoya district, along the Pakwach-Olwiyo- Karuma Highway.
According to the Traffic Police and Road Safety Spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, four passengers died on spot while 3 succumbed to injuries at Anaka Hospital where they had been rushed. He says 16 others are critically injured and are being treated at Anaka General Hospital.
Kananura says that preliminary investigations indicate that the Bus driver attempted to overtake two vehicles ahead of him and in the process collided head-on with the Lorry. He adds that eyewitnesses say the driver had been driving recklessly right from Arua and passengers raised concerns, however, the turn-man responded aggressively.
Reports indicate that, the bus registration number UBP 736U carrying 67 passengers was traveling from Arua to Kampala, when it rammed into a lorry registration number SSD 498C, carrying fish destined to the Democratic Republic of Congo at around 1:30 am on May 4, 2026.
The Nwoya District Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Christopher Omara, confirmed the incident revealing that a number of the injured passengers have been admitted to Anaka General Hospital where they’re currently undertaking medication.
