KAMPALA
The Member of Parliament for Butiru County, Hon Godfrey Wakooli Matembu, has been elected as Chairperson of the Bugisu Parliamentary Caucus, replacing Ricard Wanda, who did not return to Parliament after the recent elections.
The election was held on Friday, 22nd May, 2026 at Parliament and brought together all the 25 Members of Parliament from the Bugisu sub-region. Leaders described Hon. Wakooli’s election as a sign of confidence in his leadership, commitment, and dedication to championing the interests of the people of Bugisu.
Hon. Wakooli will be deputized by Hon Umar Nangoli MP for Northern City Division in Mbale City.
Other members elected to the caucus leadership include Hon Shafiga Wanyenya as Secretary, Hon Sarah Nambozo as Treasurer, Hon Godfrey Wanyoto as Publicity Secretary, Hon Isaac Modoi as Advisor, and Hon Gerald Nangoli as the Caucus Whip.
While Speaking shortly after his election, Wakooli thanked fellow legislators for the trust they placed in him and pledged to unite leaders across the Bugisu sub-region in pursuit of development and better service delivery.
“I thank my fellow Members of Parliament for entrusting me with this responsibility. I am committed to working together with all leaders for the unity, transformation, and development of Bugisu,” Hon. Wakooli said.
He emphasized that the caucus would focus on lobbying for government programs and ensuring that promises made to the people of Bugisu are fulfilled.
“We are going to use this caucus as a strong voice for our people. Our goal is to ensure that government fulfills its commitments to Bugisu, especially in areas of infrastructure, education, health, and wealth creation,” he added.
Several MPs praised Hon. Wakooli for his calm leadership style, humility, and commitment to serving the people, expressing confidence that his leadership will strengthen unity and amplify the region’s voice in Parliament.
