Uganda’s Mufti, Sheikh Ramathan Mubaje, on Friday, 5th June, 2026 resumed a Shs3 billion fundraising campaign to complete the Nakaloke Mosque in Nakaloke, Northern City Division, Mbale City.
The mosque, once finished, will have three floors and will also house the Supreme Council offices for the Muslim community in the Elgon region. Construction began last year and has so far reached 40%.
Speaking at the fundraising event at the construction site, Mubaje said the target had not yet been met, prompting the renewed drive to raise the remaining funds and finish the project as planned.
He noted that while the Bugisu region has over 500 mosques, many were built with support from Turkey and other Arab countries. This time, he said, the focus is on mobilizing Muslims in Bugisu and local well-wishers to take ownership, especially following the passage of the Sovereignty Bill into law.
Sheikh Ahmad Hamid Wandega, Eastern Regional Assistant to the Mufti, said the completed mosque will be the largest in the entire eastern region.
He urged the Muslim community to give generously toward building God’s house, in line with Quranic teachings, for everlasting reward.
Umaru Nangoli, area MP for Northern City Division, also called on stakeholders and the Muslim community to support the construction as a way of advancing the Islamic faith. He contributed Shs1 million.
Other pledges included 100 bags of cement from the Mufti, Shs1 million from Shafiga Wanyenya, MP for Bungokho North in Mbale district, and Shs1 million from Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, State Minister for Public Service and Woman MP for Mbale City.
