JINJA CITY
Jinja City Mayor, Al-Hajji Nagaya Abdalahafiz has pledged his support towards the UNESCO goals and development of a desired tourism and heritage city.
This after the admission of Jinja City into the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities on 20th June 2026, at the closure of a workshop, organized by the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO, that attracted representatives from various cities across Uganda to share experiences and capacity building.
Jinja City’s admission into the network is expected to boost efforts aimed at improving education, skills development and participation while strengthening the city’s position as a center for innovation and sustainable urban growth.
Peter Mawerere, the Jinja City Assistant Clerk said this would help Jinja City and other aspiring learning cities strengthen their development strategies and pledged to ensure all tourism and heritage sites in Jinja are profiled.
Meanwhile, Charles Dreacabo, the UNESCO representative East African office described the admission as timely. He commended Jinja City’s leadership for supporting the initiative, noting that such commitments are critical in helping the city realize its aspirations as a learning.
He called for effective collaboration among local governments, educational institutions, civil society organizations, private sector and local communities.
