The International Crimes Division of the High Court in Wandegeya has granted National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president for Central Uganda and former Butambala County MP, Muwanga Kivumbi bail.
Kivumbi was granted a cash bail of Shs10 million today, Thursday, July 9, 2026 while each of his co-accused was granted cash bail of Shs1million.
Kivumbi and his co-accused are facing terrorism charges following their arrest between January 2 and 14, 2026, in Butambala district. The arrests came after a security operation at Kivumbi’s home during which more than seven people were shot dead.
The accused applied for bail on May 4, arguing that they had fulfilled the legal requirements for release pending trial.
Cheers and celebrations filled the air as the Court granted bail to Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi with NUP supporters, led by Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, welcoming the decision with jubilation.
Other bail conditions for Muwanga Kivumbi include surrendering his passport to court immediately, no leaving the country, report once every month to the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Butambala and to the ICD Court every last Friday of the month.
Once the prosecution commits the case to the High Court, appearances in Butambala shall stop.
