MBALE CITY
Police at Mbale Central Police Station are investigating a fatal road accident in which a 55-year-old businessman was crushed to death by a truck along Tororo Road.
The deceased has been identified as James Watawa, a resident of Buwodada Village in Sironko District.
According to SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, the accident occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at about 9:55 AM opposite Police Children School in Wanyera Cell.
He says preliminary reports indicate that Watawa was riding a white Kawasaki motorbike, registration number UGD 997A. He was reportedly in front of a white HOWO truck, registration number UBN 667Y, as he approached the Kaguta Road junction and waited to branch off.
It is alleged that as he waited for vehicles from the opposite direction to clear, a speeding motorbike from the opposite side knocked him down. The impact threw him into the path of the truck, which was coming from the Sleeping Baby roundabout, and he was run over and died instantly.
The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash.
Police responded to the scene, and the body of the deceased was taken to the mortuary pending a postmortem.
Both the truck and the motorbike have been impounded and are currently parked at Mbale CPS yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles, IOV.
Police have urged motorists and boda boda riders to be cautious and observe traffic rules to avoid similar tragedies.
