The Namisindwa District Local Government has declared a quarantine on animals following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.
The quarantine was declared by the Chief Administrative Officer of Namisindwa, Lomongin Joseph, through a letter dated Tuesday, 14th July, 2026. He stated that the quarantine follows over 21 death cases that have been registered in different sub-counties.
He said that starting Wednesday, 15th July, 2026, no animal will be allowed to cross in or out of Namisindwa District, and all cattle markets have been closed until further notice.
Lomongin added that the measure is aimed at curbing the spread of the disease, which has escalated in the district.
Emma Bwayo, the LCV Chairperson of Namisindwa, urged farmers to respect the quarantine so that the outbreak can be tamed in the district.
He urged people living along the Uganda-Kenya border not to continue with cattle trade since it will promote the spread of the disease. Community members are urged to comply with the quarantine and avoid moving cattle to help contain the disease.
“We urgently call on the Ministry of Agriculture to intervene, as the Foot-and-Mouth Disease outbreak has caused significant cattle deaths, threatening livelihoods and wealth creation efforts,” Bwayo said.
