A family of six has died after lightning struck their home in Nyanza Cell, Oleba Town Council, Maracha District, during an early morning thunderstorm.
The victims, who included a father, mother, and their four children, were killed at about 5:00 a.m. on Saturday when the lightning bolt hit their residence amid heavy rainfall.
Oleba Town Council LCIII Chairperson, Robert Angupi confirmed the incident, saying the strike caused a fire that destroyed the family’s houses.
The bodies of the deceased remained at the scene as authorities conducted preliminary assessments and prepared to handle the remains according to standard procedures.
Residents of Nyanza Cell expressed shock and grief following the loss of the entire family, with community leaders calling for support for the affected relatives.
Lightning strikes are a recurring hazard in Uganda, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, with rural communities often facing increased risks due to limited access to protective infrastructure.
Authorities are expected to release more information regarding the victims and arrangements for the affected family.
