KAMULI
Police in Kamuli on 5th August 2026 embarked on investigations into the death of a 17-year-old Senior Three student who committed suicide by hanging in Nabirumba Parish, Nabwigulu Sub- County, Kamuli District.
The deceased was Basooma Amuza, a student of Irundu Secondary School where he is alleged to have been expelled after he was found in possession of a mobile phone.
According to preliminary reports, Basooma returned home from school with a mobile phone on Tuesday and his father reportedly questioned him about the phone, as he had left for school without one, and confiscated it pending further inquiry.
Nabwigulu Sub- County LCIII Chairperson, George Bogere said the tragedy is the second of its kind in the area in a period of two weeks. He urged parents, community leaders and religious leaders to strengthen guidance and support for young people. He said that discipline is key in the nurturing of children.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Private Schools in Kamuli District, Muyangu Swaib, who is also a resident of Nabirumba, encouraged students to openly share their challenges with parents, teachers, or trusted friends rather than suffering in silence.
Busoga North Police spokesperson, Samson Lubega said that the body was released to the family to continue with the burial arrangements as investigations continue into the incident.
Lubega called for stronger guidance and counselling services in schools and homes to support learners facing emotional and personal challenges.
