Mourners attending the burial of 10-year-old Jonathan Namajji in Namudunyo Village, Busabi Sub-county in Butaleja district, were left stunned on Thursday, 6th August after a fight between two co-wives disrupted the church funeral service.
The altercation involved a woman identified as Namujogo and her co-wife, Namusabi, both wives of Ismail Weere. According to eyewitnesses, Namujogo arrived at the funeral carrying a sword and confronted Namusabi during the church service, accusing her of taking away her husband’s affection after Weere married her while she was reportedly battling mental illness.
The confrontation quickly escalated into a physical fight, drawing the attention of mourners and church leaders who attempted to restore order.
Witnesses further claimed that Weere did not intervene to stop the fight and instead encouraged the women, describing their actions as a sign of their love for him.
The funeral service was being led by Rev. Elizabeth Nambasa, the Parish Priest of Busabi Church of Uganda, who condemned the disruption and questioned claims that Namujogo’s actions were solely the result of mental illness.
“It is unfortunate that such an incident has occurred during a solemn funeral service,” Rev. Nambasa said.
The priest also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family of Douson Elaye, who suffered the loss of both his wife and son within a week.
Jonathan Namajji was being laid to rest just one week after the death of his mother, Stella Nawegulo, 41, who reportedly died under unexplained circumstances on July 28. She leaves behind 10 children, including one-month-old twins.
Speaking after the burial, Elaye recounted the events leading to his son’s death.
“On Wednesday, Jonathan suddenly began crying and repeatedly called out for his late mother,” Elaye said. “I bought him his favorite foods, thinking he was hungry, but he could neither eat nor drink. He later collapsed and died.”
Elaye added that Jonathan had been born healthy but became physically disabled at the age of six.
Stella Nawegulo was a sister to Hajji Imran Muluga, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Soroti.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of both Stella Nawegulo and Jonathan Namajji remain unclear.
