The Minister of Health, Hon. Chris Baryomunsi has informed Parliament that cabinet has rescinded its earlier position that suspended the facilitation of medical interns, adding that the current lot of interns will receive their Shs1m allowance.
Addressing MPs on the Floor of Parliament today, Tuesday, August 18, 2026, Baryomunsi revealed that Medical interns will receive their monthly gross pay Shs1,268,929, which when taxed remains Shs1M net.
Reacting to the Minister’s submission, the Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa said the two major issues medical interns raised have now been addressed.
“We were demanding from the minister, one, that the interns should be paid. They reversed the decision, the interns are going to be paid.”
“Number two, we are saying, the interns were demanding that they need to be allowed to graduate before they can do internship. And it has been resolved,” said Tayebwa.
Meanwhile, Baryomunsi also told Parliament that he will engage the Judiciary and the Attorney General over the possible dropping of charges against eight medical interns arrested during protests over internship allowances.
The interns were arrested on August 12, 2026, while marching along Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala. They were charged with causing a common nuisance and granted bail on August 17.
He directed that the 80 intern doctors who were arrested for demonstrating should be released and deployed back to work.
The Minister says Directors to hospitals are to be instructed to ensure all interns are well accommodated near hospitals to reduce risk of injuries.
