Police in Tororo District have arrested a retired private UPDF officer for allegedly impersonating a serving colonel and defrauding civilians during last week’s UPDF recruitment exercise.
The suspect, identified as Osinde Ayeet Bernard of Aputir Central Village, is accused of presenting himself as “Colonel Ayeet” and promising to help people join the UPDF in exchange for money.
According to residents, the matter caused public outcry after several complaints were filed. The suspect allegedly approached civilians and even senior police officers with the recruitment offer.
When questioned, Bernard claimed he was a retired UPDF private who retired at age 30, and said poverty pushed him into the act.
IP Moses Johnson Mugwe, the Bukedi South Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest. He said the suspect has been charged with impersonation and obtaining money by false pretense.
“UPDF recruitment is free of charge and is conducted at designated centers. No officer, retired or serving, is authorized to ask for money to help anyone join,” Mugwe warned.
The suspect is currently in custody at Tororo Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Police have urged anyone who was conned by the suspect to report to the nearest police station and record a statement.
