MBALE CITY
Police in Mbale City are currently holding a midwife working at Busamaga Health Centre III over allegations of extortion. The incident happened today, Thursday, 8th October, 2026 at the facility.
According to anonymous sources, the midwife only identified as Magie asked for 15,000 shillings from a mother who came to deliver last night before giving her mama kit. After the successful delivery last night, she again today morning wanted 50,000/= before discharging her, which forced the attendant to report to the in-charge, Janet Nabulo.
The source also told our reporter that after the caretaker reported the midwife to the In-Charge for detaining them at the facility due to lack of money, the in-charge handed the matter over to police.
Hamuza Banja, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Industrial City Division, confirmed the incident, saying the midwife is currently being detained at Busamaga Police Post as investigations continue.
He says these are some of the issues he has been handling for the whole of this year at the facility, but there have been no changes. He thanks the in-charge and community members for exposing the corrupt.
Banja adds that they have been receiving allegations about staff at the facility such as extortion of money from patients, stealing and selling government drugs, and reporting on duty late and absenteeism.
Mbale City Deputy Town Clerk, Hasoho Jolly has condemned the unprofessional manner in which the midwife behaved, yet she knows very well that services and mama kits at government health facilities are free.
