The Acting Minister of Education and Sports Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo on Wednesday 7th October 2026 visited St Stephen’s Secondary School in Budondo in Jinja City and Kakira Vocational Training Institute in Jinja District to highlight ongoing investments in education and skills development.

The visit showcased improvements to learning and training environments, including the commissioning of new facilities and the commencement of further construction works at the two institutions.

This is part of the wider cooperation between the Government of Uganda, the European Union, the Government of Belgium through Enabel-a Belgian Agency for International Cooperation.

The Government of Belgium through Enabel supports 10 vocational institutes across the country to improve access to quality and market-relevant skills for the youth.

At St’ Stephen’s Secondary School, Budondo in Jinja City, the Minister commissioned newly completed eco-prefabricated (wooden) classrooms and staff houses. The facilities are expected to decongest the school, improve the teaching environment and provide decent accommodation for teachers, hence enhancing retention and performance.

At Kakira Vocational Training Institute in Jinja District, the Minister commissioned a motorized solar water system and laid a foundation stone to mark the commencement of construction of an Agriculture Laboratory.

In his address, Muyingo said the investments form part of deliberate government efforts to strengthen the institute’s capacity to provide practical and market-relevant vocational training.

He commended the European Union, the Government of Belgium and Enabel for supporting Uganda’s education priorities, particularly in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Meanwhile, Nicholas Oebel, the Country Director of Enabel, said the visit forms part of the longstanding cooperation between Uganda and Belgium in support of Uganda’s development priorities.

Alex Mukakanya, the Coordinator of Enabel programs at the institute and Deputy Principal of Kakira Community Technical Institute, said Enabel’s engagement with Kakira VTI has included work on institutional planning and management, instructor development, industry exposure, work readiness and training with production.
