The government of Kenya has lifted a ban it had slapped on importation of powder milk including that produced from Uganda.
The lifting of the ban is contained in a letter dated 14th March, 2023 signed by Harri Kimtai, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development.
The letter which is addressed to all milk importers and copied to the Cabinet Secretary (Minister) of Agriculture and Livestock Development and Managing Director, Kenya Dairy Board, nullifies the directive given by the 6th March letter written by Kenya Dairy Board.
“The stoppage issued through Kenya Dairy Board letter ref: KDB/MD/SED/1 dated 6th March, 2023 is hereby suspended to allow for the Dairy Industry Imports/ Exports Regulations 2021,” reads the letter in part.
Dairy Industry Imports/ Exports Regulations 2021 considers goods traded from within East African Community as ‘transfers’ and not imports.
According to Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for EAC Affairs, the decision to lift the ban was in the spirit of the East African Community.
“Am delighted to inform the dairy Industry in Uganda that the Ban on Milk products has been suspended, Have also had fruitful discussions with the Mr Abdi Dubat , Permanent Secretary Kenya Ministry of East African Community 9n bilateral issue,” Kadaga said in a tweet today, 15th March, 2023.
